New Delhi - Kuna

At least 39 people were killed and nearly 127 injured in two separate accidents in India, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Sunday. Seven people were killed in the northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir when the passenger bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Jammu region. As many as 27 people were injured in the accident. Among the dead were five children. The injured were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital. The death toll is likely to rise, as the condition of seven is said to be very critical. In a separate incident, in the country's eastern northernmost state of West Bengal district, Darjelling, 32 people lost their lives and nearly 100 injured when a wooden bridge they were standing on suddenly collapsed. The victims were standing on the bridge to listen to speeches made by some local government officials. The ill-fated bridge was built in 1942 and was weakened in a recent earthquake, which had killed many people in the area. Confirming the deaths, Darjelling District Collector told KUNA over phone "32 people died in the incident". As the bridge collapsed, the victims fell into a river flowing beneath it. Rescue work is still going on till the last reports came in.
