Chairman of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union, Mamdouh el-Wali has revealed he was attacked while voting in syndicate elections in Cairo. El-Wali described the attack as an “unprecedented incident,” adding that it was an issue for the union only. The chairman revealed he had expected violence – following threats made against him on Thursday – but he insisted on attending to vote in elections, which will decide on a new chairman as well as six union board members. He was unapologetic, he said. Reports suggest another journalist attacked el-Wali after he had placed his ballot. Supporters came to his aid, turning the union building into what he called “a scene from a battle.” Election results are expected to be announced soon.
