Manama - Arab Today

A decision to suspend the transmission of Manama-based Al-Arab Channel was due to the channel's failure to obtain the required licences before starting broadcasting from Bahrain, Information Affairs Minister Isa Abdulrahman Al Hammadi revealed at the post-cabinet press conference.
The channel's activities have to comply with the media laws and regulations as well as Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and international agreements, the minister affirmed, pointing out the importance to consider the decisive regional and international war on terrorism. He explained that the cabinet approved today a recommendation by the High Authority for Information and Communication (HAIC) on suspension of Al-Arab Satellite TV channel activities because of its failure to meet the needed technical and administrative requirements.
As for the general budget, the Information Affairs Minister said the cabinet had discussed the main orientations and proposals, pointing out that detailed figures have not been discussed yet before their submission to the parliament as a project. He explained that work is in full swing at the Finance Ministry and communication with the government bodies is going on to finish preparing the budget.
The Information Affairs Minister reiterated Bahrain's unwavering stance in being part of the decisive war on terrorism in coordination with the GCC and allied countries. He pointed out that in case there is a new development in Bahrain's stance regarding the war on Daash terrorism, it will be announced by the Foreign Ministry.
As for toughening up punishment for traffic offences with the new Traffic Law put into effect, the minister affirmed that the aim is to protect lives and ensure road users' compliance with the law. He urged people to respect traffic regulations, pointing out an awareness campaign by the Interior Ministry's General Traffic Directorate to inform the public about the new law and its advantages.
Concerning the price of the barrel of oil considered for the new budget, the Information Affairs Minister said the issue is not settled yet as most government revenues are directly linked to oil prices. He pointed out that work is still on by competent authorities in this respect.
The minister said Bahrain will celebrate on February 14 its National Action Charter anniversary which is a constant reminder of the kingdom's numerous achievements on the path of reform and development.
