Tunisia - Nabil Zaghdod

Dr. Imad El Rakek, specialist in psychiatry and neurology, says that the Tunisian revolution has a had significant impact on the psyche of every Tunisian citizen. Surprise, fear, thinking, and planning ahead for a different future, all play a role in the people’s psychology, especially in children and teenagers.” He added that all the emotions experienced during the revolution result in cases of anxiety, tension, and mood disorders such as depression, along with tension in children, adolescents and elderly people. However, he claims that there are many things that can return the balance, such as focusing on a better future, and getting rid of a painful past in which many did not enjoy enough comfort or opportunities, and lacked in affirmation of the self. In addition, he stated that the revolution has created solidarity and cooperation among the people. For example, neighbours are becoming more friendly, respectable and cooperative. El Rakek added, "The path of the revolution is a continuous one that will see improvements and random events taking place. People with strong characters will cope well in these uncertain times. They will not have the instinct to panic when witnessing events, and will engage actively in social, political, and cultural fields. On the other hand weak characters or people undergoing personal growth should not be informed of everything that is taking place. This type of person, knowing their limitations and aware of their lack of analysis, and fear of the effects of the shock, will not have as much interest in public affairs. They will isolate themselves from the events occurring and will try to continue living their life normally. They may suffer from tension, mood swings, and shock, if confronted by some of the conflict. So how would a normal and balanced individual react to the traumatic and tumultuous events taking place? The Associate Professor of the Faculty of Medicine in Tunis says, "They will have a normal reaction. This type of person will try to understand and absorb the event, analyzing it through dialogues with friends, or through social networks and satellite channels. This will help them to overcome the negative psychological effect of the events. However, they may still be the kind of individuals subject to tension, psychological illnesses, more than usual at this present time." In light of the major changes and developments that Tunisia is undergoing, in the long run, Tunisian citizens are expected to gain strong and distinctive characteristics. They should gain more self-confidence and feelings of pride, and dignity should make an impact on the collective subconscious. Looking forward to freedom of opinion and expression is now a well-established characteristic in the people of Tunisia, and this will develop as the years go by. On the other hand, Dr. Rakek emphasizes that "There may be a rise in severe mental illnesses over this period, but many of them will be temporary and circumstantial, and can be overcome by consulting a doctor or psychiatrist. Moreover, cooperation and the solidarity of family members will reduce tension and the risk of mental illness. The third solution lies in the cooperation of the community as a whole. It may develop and improve its general status – as we have already seen in many locations.” The psychiatrist said finally that the possible psychological tensions expected after these changes in Tunisia can be overcome with the togetherness of family and community, cooperation, and the consultation of doctors, psychologists, and therapists.
