UAE a perfect global model of tolerance
Abu Dhabi - Arab Today

As the world marks the International Day for Tolerance on Thursday, one nation stands apart as a glorious example for unity in diversity and a perfect model for peaceful coexistence, equality and cultural diversity: the UAE.

The UAE is one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse countries in the world, but also remains one of the most peaceful, harmonious and prosperous places on earth.

"While growing intolerance poses a huge challenge to many nations, the UAE has set flawless examples on what a truly tolerant society is all about," said The Gulf Today in an editorial on Thursday.

The paper continued, "The recent decision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to rename Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Mosque as the Maryam Umm Issa (Mary, Mother of Jesus) Mosque is one such example of how the UAE promotes broadmindedness.

"The UAE was ranked first regionally and third globally in the Tolerance Index of the 2016 Yearbook issued by the International Institute for Management Development, Switzerland, on the occasion of International Day for Tolerance, last November.

"The most beautiful pedestrian bridge in the Emirate of Dubai on the new water canal has been named the Bridge of Tolerance.

"The country made a key contribution towards ushering in a new chapter in world history when it launched last year the world’s first tolerance charter aimed at spreading the values of tolerance, peace and coexistence.

"Right since the inception, the leadership has been making consistent and earnest efforts to promote such noble values. Goodness, tolerance and humanitarian outlook were all part of the UAE founding father and a beacon for future generations, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s nature, instincts and creed.

The progress achieved on various fronts, coupled with open-mindedness that characterises the way of life, has meant that government has traditionally enjoyed overwhelming support from all citizens and expatriates alike.

"The launch of a ministry exclusively dedicated to tolerance reflects the UAE leadership’s determination to promote the true image of Islam not only in the UAE, but also worldwide.

The paper concluded by quoting the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as saying, "Tolerance and the Emirates are two sides of one coin... This is a fundamental value for our people and a guarantee for the future development of our country."
