Dubai - ANSA

The countdown to the end of the month of Ramadan already fills the air of euphoria, for entirely different reasons. On a hand, after three weeks of sacrifices like fasting and abstention from various activities seem to have become lighter, enthusiastically thingking about the festivities of Eid, on the other hand, spiritual moments, made of actions and words, seem to multiply. All mosques in the UAE, as well as in all Arab countries are open day and night for the last ten days, to allow the believers to dedicate themeselves to the itikaf, or meditation. The month of Ramadan it is also the time in which Muslims are asked to read the Koran, the revealed and therefore sacred text of Islam, carefully. Tradition started by the Prophet Muhammad, and it is intensified during the last ten days of Ramadan culminating on the night of Laylat Al Qadr, the night in which it isbelieved that the Koran was revealed by God. Every action performed on that night gains a particular value under the eyes ofAllah. To understand how important is the knowledge and the right recitation of the Koran, you have to take into consideration the competitions organized during Ramadan in the Islamic countries, including the one in Dubai, one of the most considered, perhaps because it offers a first prize of 50,000 euros. To win is not enough to have memorized 6000 verses of the Koran: they have to be sung melodically, and must reflect the calm, concentration, serenity of the soul. Not a mere recitation, but the capacity of conveying to the listener the bliss of the verses. On a more profane note, however, restaurants, cafes' and premises where the atmosphere of Arab culture is displayed, are regularly sold-out. Breaking the fasting with an iftar, the meal at sunset, in environments where the modern and millennial mingle, is an invitation hard to resist. In draped tents set up in every corner of the city illuminated by the lights of fanus, the lanterns of Ramadan, people gather to eat, smoke the hookah, play old board games almost forgotten, waiting for the dawn meal called sohour, before reinitiating the privations of a new day. With the comfort of air conditioning, thanks to modern times.
