One person was killed by shots fired at anti-Hezbollah protesters near the Iranian Embassy in Beirut Sunday afternoon, officials said. Protesters gathered outside the embassy building ahead of a planned demonstration protesting Hezbollah's growing intervention in the Syrian civil war, The (Beirut) Daily Star reported. Men dressed in black wearing yellow ribbons (Hezbollah colors) began pushing protesters affiliated with the Lebanese Option Gathering movement away from the area when they exited buses near the embassy complex, the newspaper said. The men began beating protesters and some opened fire at those gathering at the scene. One person was killed and several were injured, the paper. The exact number of injured was not specified. A statement issued by the Lebanese Army said: "Upon the arrival of a convoy belonging to a political side in Bir Hassan for a protest outside the Iranian Embassy over the ongoing events in Syria, a fight broke out between members of the convoy and some citizens during which one of the individuals opened fire using a pistol that led to the serious wounding of a citizen who later died." Protests against Hezbollah were reported elsewhere in the capital including a sit-in at the Central Beirut District and another at Martyr's Square, the newspaper said.
