The State of Kuwait has devoted great attention to women at educational and health and cultural levels, according to a Kuwaiti envoy speaking at a UN session.
Badria Al-Khaldi, an advisor at the Kuwaiti Cabinet Women Affairs Committee, said during the 59th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, that the Kuwaiti committee for women was established in 2002, under chairmanship of Sheikha Latifa Al-Fahad Al-Salem Al-Sabah, "thus serving as the official umbrella" for them.
The Kuwaiti commission plays a major role in aiding the women to take part in development schemes and decision making, Al-Khaldi said, also noting that it had organized numerous conventions and seminars for that purpose. Moreover, a large number of cooperation accords have been signed with Arab and foreign states.
Al-Khaldi said issues such as combating anti-women violence, political franchise and civil rights, solidifying social status are among major causes that have been adopted by the commission, making achievements in these sectors particularly with enacting of legislations intended to safeguard such rights.
She noted need for greater support and help from various departments and authorities in Kuwait to push ahead with enhancing women status. "There are certain snags on this long path, however it is promising and will end up with fruitful results," the Kuwaiti envoy added.
