Manama - Arabstoday

The coach of Bahrain's football team has said the team "did nothing wrong" in the wake of the sport's governing body announcing that it would probe the Gulf state's recent 10-0 victory over Indonesia. The scoreline had aroused suspicion with FIFA as the ten-goal romp was exactly the result required by Bahrain to match rivals Qatar to progress to the next round in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. FIFA announced its intentions to conduct a “routine examination" following the game. "FIFA security will conduct a routine examination of this game and its result," a spokesperson for FIFA told the UK’s Telegraph newspaper in a statement. They added that the probe was justified "given the unusual outcome against results expectation and head-to-head history, and in the interests of maintaining unequivocal confidence in our game." Upon hearing about FIFA’s decision to investigate the win, Bahrain’s national coach Peter Taylor said his team “did nothing wrong”. Taylor, who was hired to coach Bahrain in July, said: “At the end of the day, the game was played and we did as well as we possibly could and played the strongest team we could. “All we can do is turn up and try and win a match. We should have won by more than 10. We missed two penalties.” Indonesia lost its five previous group matches, allowing 16 goals and scoring just three. Taylor also criticised Indonesia for sending a team made up mostly of reserves onto the pitch.
