A suicide bomber killed at least 48 Yemeni soldiers at a base in the city of Aden, a local security official said, in another major attack claimed by Daesh on forces allied to a Saudi-led military coalition, a statement by Yemeni military headquarters said on Saturday.
The statement, which was made available to Arab News, added that around 31 soldiers were also injured in the terrorist attack.
"The Yemeni General Headquarters condemns this cowardly attack, which aims to spread chaos and havoc and obstruct public life in Yemen," said the statement.
Commander of the Fourth Military Region Maj. Gen. Fadhl Hassan said on his twitter account that the explosion resulted in the killing of dozens of soldiers and the injury of several others.
“A suicide bomber who was wearing an explosion belt blew up him self 200 meters from the military site’s main gate targeting a group of soldiers who happened to be converging at the gate getting ready to get their salaries,” he said.
“We have launched an investigation ad hoc into this terrorist act committed by forces of hatred to identify the perpetrators behind it,” he said, adding strict and new measure have been taken to ensure such terrorist acts never happen again.
Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack in a message posted online, Reuters reported on Saturday.
The Yemeni branch of the militant group based in Iraq and Syria has carried out many deadly bombings around troops in the southern port city, which is under the control of the internationally recognized government.
“A martyr from the Islamic State detonated his explosives belt in Al-Sawlaban military camp in Aden during a gathering of the Yemeni army,” the Daesh-affilliated Amaq news outlet said.
In August, a Daesh militant rammed his explosives-laden car into an army recruiting center in Aden, killing 71 people in the deadliest militant attack on the city in over a year.
On Monday, Yemeni authorities arrested eight suspected Daesh militants implicated in a spate of attacks targeting security personnel in the city this year.
