Cairo - Arab Today

Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez extolled Al Azhar's role in entrenching the culture of peaceful coexistence and its efforts to promote international peace among peoples.

Following a meeting with Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb on Thursday, the Uruguayan president described the meeting as useful and important to help promote peace and values of fraternity and love and renounce racism and all forms of violence and terrorism.

Vázquez said that he was keen on following up the meeting between Tayyeb and Pope Francis of the Vatican, expressing his support of their joint cooperation to uphold the values of peace and peaceful coexistence.

For his part, Tayyeb welcomed the Uruguayan president's visit to Egypt, saying his visit will promote cooperation between the two countries in trade and economic domains.

Earlier in the day, the two sides reviewed efforts exerted by Tayyeb, in his capacity as the president of the Muslim Council of Elders, to promote the value of tolerance and peaceful coexistence, disseminate the culture of peace and renounce violence and extremism.
