A number of key political opposition figures have been freed in Myanmar following a prisoner amnesty issued here.
Leaders of the "88 Generation Students" group, which was at the forefront of the 1988 events, were among those freed, a local official told the German News Agency (DPA).
Myanmar's new government, elected last March, has released a total of 20,000 prisoners, including 347 political ones.
Freeing political dissidents has been a major requirement for Myanmar to normalize its ties with the West.
