Jakarta - Arab Today

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged the United Nations to immediately take action to stop violence in Egypt.

"The people of Indonesia are concerned about the situation in Egypt. The number of victims is on the rise, and there are no signs of peace," he said at a press conference at the presidential palace on Thursday.

President Yudhoyono added that the United Nations and all countries should pay more attention to the situation in Egypt.

"I urge all countries and the United Nations to pay more attention to the situation in Egypt and take necessary actions to prevent humanitarian tragedy," he explained.

People should not resort to violence to overcome peaceful demonstrations. This is unwise and unacceptable, he said.

"The military should respect democracy; the use of military force and weapons on peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable," he added.

President Yudhoyono believes that the military, the government, and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt should come up with a solution that is acceptable to all.

"Indonesia`s experience (during the reform process) suggests that it is impossible for the problem in Egypt to be settled without a win-win solution. It is now time for the UN Security Council to take necessary actions," he said.

President Yudhoyono is constantly communicating with the Indonesian ambassador in Egypt, Nurfaizi, to ensure that Indonesians in Egypt are safe.

He has urged Indonesian students in Egypt to be cautious and avoid getting involved in conflicts.
