Six crew members, including the captain, were kidnapped from the Liberian-flagged container ship while the ship was sailing some 50 nautical miles south-west of Bonny, Nigeria.
An armed group of eight pirates came on a black speed boat and managed to board the German container ship "Demeter" south of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Bight of Bonny, Al Hurra channel reported, quoting a statement by the sea Guardian as saying on Tuesday.
The Nigerian pirates kidnapped six crew members, including the captain and then left it.
The remaining 12 crew members were reported unhurt while the ship resumed sailing until it arrived at safe water, the statement noted.
The container ship was in Gulf of Guinea southeast of Abijan, heading for Monrovia, Liberia.
In an report issued in the past week, International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said that as many as 121 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships were reported this year.
