Abdelkrim Benatiq, Minister in charge of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) and Migration Affairs, affirmed on August 10 that there are 5 million Moroccans living abroad, 7,000 of whom are doctors, while 490,000 are occupying important job titles in foreign countries.
The minister gave the figure at a meeting held on National Migrant Day in Rabat, which said was “an opportunity to strengthen the ties between Moroccans living abroad (MRE) and their homeland.”
The meeting was held under the slogan “Investments of Moroccans of the World: Opportunities and Challenges.”
“MREs face challenges in the foreign countries they live in, including social, economic and political challenges,” said the minister.
He went on to add that “it is necessary to listen to them on an ongoing basis through the Moroccan embassies and consulates based in the countries they live in.”
The minister emphasized that the meeting aimed to evaluate investment opportunities and the challenges faced by the Moroccans of the world. He added that the meeting was also an opportunity to encourage Moroccans to take part in major investment projects in the kingdom.
The meeting was marked by the attendance of Mohamed Mhidia, Wali of the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region.
The Wali highlighted King Mohammed VI’s profound appreciation of Moroccans living abroad.
Mhidia said that the Moroccan diaspora plays an important role in the development of the kingdom’s economy. He also praised the Moroccans living abroad for remaining attached to their identity.
The meeting was organized by the prefecture of Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region and was attended by several local officials and representatives of the Moroccan community living abroad
