A tweet by former United States
Rabat - Arab Today

A tweet by former United States President Barack Obama, condemning the racism of far-right groups in Charlottesville, Virginia, has become the most liked tweet in history.

The tweet has been liked by more than 3 million social media users.

Obama used a quote of the late South African leader Nelson Mandela, whose struggle against the Apartheid system in his country has been inspirational for generations that believe in ethnic equality.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion,” wrote the former first black president of the US.

The quote accompanied a beautiful picture of the former president smiling at four babies of different ethnic backgrounds, looking down at him from a small window.

He added another quote of Mandela taken from his autobiography ‘Long Walk to Freedom’: “People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

Obama’s tweet came amid the violence that erupted in Charlottesville on Friday and Saturday, which saw clashes between white supremacists and neo-Nazis and anti-fascist counter-protesters.

Current US President Donald Trump came under fire by liberal media and politicians for blaming the violence on both sides. Detractors say the president has not taken a clear stance in denouncing the extremist groups despite a previous statement where he called racism “evil.
