American Sniper is the No. 1 movie at the North American box office, raking in more than $90.2 million in receipts this weekend, Rentrak announced Sunday.
The movie set a new record for the best January weekend haul and best take ever for a non-franchise film. The number also represented a career best for director Clint Eastwood.
Although the movie opened in select theaters Christmas Day, this was the first weekend the Chris Kyle biopic was in wide release.
The film also last week earned six Oscar nominations including nods for Best Picture and Best Actor Bradley Cooper.
Coming in at No. 2 at the U.S. and Canadian box office was The Wedding Ringer with $21 million, followed by Paddington at No. 3 with $19.3 million, Taken 3 at No. 4 with $14 million and Selma at No. 5 with $8.3 million.
Rounding out the top tier are The Imitation Game at No. 6 with $7.2 million, Into the Woods at No, 7 with $6.5 million, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies at No. 8 with $4.9 million, Unbroken at No. 9 with $4.3 million and Blackhat at No. 10 with $4 million.
