The city of Taipei on Monday incinerated tonnes of ractopamine-laced beef imported from the United States, in a move to dispel public doubts over food safety. To stop the circulation of beef with residues of the leanness-enhancing stimulant, a total of 7,490 kg of beef was destroyed along with other garbage at an incinerator in Taipei, according to the environmental protection bureau of Taipei. The incineration will not cause air pollution, according to local media reports. Ractopamine is allowed in animal feed in more than 20 countries, but is banned in Taiwan.
