Washington - Upi

Carbon monoxide from a water heater at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York state sent at least 42 people to area hospitals Sunday night, police said. Kings Point police Sgt. James Dalgish told Newsday the gas leaked from a water heater in the basement of the academy's Barry Hall. Kings Point and Nassau County police said the victims were taken to hospitals for evaluation, the newspaper said. Carbon monoxide incidents also were reported in Connecticut and Massachusetts this weekend, authorities said. The Hartford Courant reported 10 people in Bridgeport, Conn., including two young children, were taken to the hospital early Saturday with signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. Fire officials said high levels of the deadly gas were detected on all three floors of the home. Boston's WCVB-TV reported a Brookline family fled their home Sunday afternoon because of high levels of carbon monoxide. Fire officials said a mother and her son went to a hospital to be checked out as a precaution. The sources of the gas leaks in those two cases weren't reported.
