Cholera cases in DR Congo top 5,000

A cholera outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has infected more than 5,000 people and caused nearly 300 deaths since March, the United Nations said Wednesday. Bandundu, Equateur and Province Orientale are the worst-hit regions. "The 5,000 mark was reached this week with 5,088 reported cases of cholera, including 296 deaths," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement. Cholera is a highly contagious intestinal infection that can kill if not treated properly.
