Cancer Awareness Nation (CAN) launched a campaign Tuesday to raise awareness about early detection of prostate cancer.
Most of prostate cancer cases grow slowly but there are other types "more vicious and dangerous," said Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Awadhi, CAN chairman and partonage of the campaign, due until end of this month.
Cancer cells can spread from the protstate to other parts of the body, specially the lymphatic system, said Al-Awadhi, who explained that prostate cancer occurs in the gland of the male reproductive system.
Prostate cancer, said Al-Awadhi, could cause difficulties in urination and other troubles during intercourse.
Al-Awadhi said males should carry out regular checks. The earlier the detection, he added, the better would be the treatment chances.
Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh, CAN vice-chairman, said CAN, launched in 2006 under His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's auspices, has succeeded in increasing from 36 to 61 percent awareness in Kuwait that cancer could be cured.
He said men over 50 years old were mostly vulnerable to prostate cancer. Al-Saleh said there were 54,000 Kuwaitis over the age of 50 years old who needed to be educated about the disease.
Al-Saleh said 20 out of 100,000 Kuwaiti people were infected with prostate cancer in 2001. He added that 51 men were infected with the disease in 2011, or a case every week.
Al-Saleh said the awareness campaigns contributed to early detection of prostate cancer among Kuwaitis.
Today's campaign, he added, was targetting men over the age of 50 and to encourage them to check themselves.
