The second infant with birth defects from the Zika virus has been born in the United States, as health officials worry that it could spread.
The baby girl was born on Wednesday in the state of New Jersey to a mother from Honduras, where the virus has taken hold. The first Zika baby was born in Hawaii from a Brazilian mother. Brazil is the country where the epidemic from the mosquito-borne virus has begun.
The New Jersey baby was born with an undersized head and shrunken brain. The 31-year old mother had been diagnosed with the virus in Honduras and came to the U.S. for treatment.
So far ten countries have reported babies born with birth defects as a result of mothers infected with the virus, against which there is no known cure. Health officials say there is a one to 14% chance of women in the U.S. contracting the virus.
