Princess Lalla Meryem, chairwoman of the National Observatory for Child's Rights, received, on Thursday in Rabat, the MedChild award given by the Mediterranean Foundation for Peace, in recognition of her efforts and actions devoted to protecting the children’s rights. Princess Lalla Meryem, also president of the Children’s Parliament and of the Moroccan Association in Support of UNICEF, was appointed as UNESCO goodwill ambassador in July 2001. She had also received, in her capacity as president of the National Union of Moroccan Women, the international Trophy awarded by the World Women Leaders association in Paris. The Princess is also president of the social works of the Royal Armed Forces, and of the Hassan II Foundation for the Moroccans living abroad. The MedChild award, which was created in 1996, is awarded yearly to senior figures from the political, cultural and artistic spheres, whose actions contribute to promoting the values of solidarity and tolerance in the Mediterranean. It was awarded in 1999 in memory of the late King Hassan II for his leading role to make the ideals of dialogue and tolerance prevail.
