Mount Toubkal
Rabat - Arab Today

A 40-year-old Moroccan man rescued five Russian tourists on Wednesday.

Tourists looking for an adventure found near disaster after they became lost for five hours in the snow during their hike to Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in Morocco and North Africa, reported Al Massae on Friday.

The man is an inhabitant of Toubkal, the same source said.

While the local and regional Gendarmerie in El-Houaz were already mobilized to find them, they are crediting the man with saving the tourists.

Moroccan authorities dispatched an emergency medical helicopter to take the tourists to the hospital to receive the necessary medical treatment.

The five tourists are currently in good health, however, they experienced a harrowing experience when they found themselves lost  and unable to find their way out of their predicament.

Fortunately for the tourists, they encountered the 40-year-old inhabitant, who acted as their guide, led them out and accompanied them to the small village of Imlil, in the town of Asni.

Climbing Mount Toubkal in the snow is considered an extremely strenuous challenge, and dangerous. In March 2016, a German woman died following a snowstorm as she was climbing the mountain.

Last June, the body of 19-year-old British backpacker Connor Jarvis was found on the Mountain, while he was in travelling alone in Morocco.
