Damascus - SANA

Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Dr. Fayssal Mikdad warned of the consequences of launching a US military aggression against Syria on the Middle East region. ''The whole Middle East will be set ablaze if the US attacked Syria,'' Mikdad told the American CBS channel. ''The US accusations against Syria of using chemical weapons are not based on evidence,'' Mikdad pointed out. ''The US would have submitted its proof to the UN if it had any,'' Mikdad said. ''We have submitted clear evidence to the UN and Russia that the armed terrorist groups used chemical weapons.'' Mikdad pointed out that ''when a country violates international law, it is not for the US or its Western allies to hold it to account, for all these countries have to go back to the UN charter to see if this country did violate international law and jeopardized world peace.'' ''If the US wants chemical weapons disarmament, Syria had submitted -before its non-permanent membership at the UN Security Council ended in 2003-a proposal for weapons of mass destruction disarmament in the Middle East, but it was the US who opposed it,'' Mikdad said. He considered that any aggression on Syria will serve the interests of Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant ''while the Syrian people will be the victim.'' Mikdad condemned talk of a possible attack against Syria, indicating that ''Jordan is a sisterly Arab country that should not threaten Syria's security, safety and stability, and not be a conduit for an aggression.'' Mikdad affirmed Syria's right to confront the aggression and respond by all means, adding ''the Syrian people stand with their leadership to confront the aggression.''
