A Libyan court in northern Tripoli Sunday filed a charge on Saadi Gaddafi, the son of Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi, accusing him of murdering his football teammate, the official LANA news agency reported.
Saadi appeared on court for the first time since his extradition from Niger in March. He was suspected of murdering the Libyan football player Bashir Riani, according to LANA.
Saadi, the third son of Muammar Gaddafi, once played football for clubs both at his home country and in Italy's Perugia.
In addition, the Attorney General's office is expected to bring other charges to Saadi, including the suppression on civilians during the 2011 turmoil, and support for insurgents in southern Libya aiming to overthrow the current government, local media reported.
Meanwhile, ex-officials from Gaddafi's government, including former Intelligent Chief Abdullah Senussi and former Prime Minister Baghdadi Mahmudi, also appeared on the court, facing charges of systematic rape, inciting violence and sabotaging national unity during the war that toppled the former administration.
