Sir Ken Robinson, Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of Warwick, on Wednesday, delivered a lecture titled, "Creative Schools: Revolutionising Education from the Ground Up" at the Majlis of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Kaufman began his lecture by complimenting the rapid progress witnessed in Abu Dhabi. "Such achievements cannot be made that fast with only financial resources. This success is due to innovation, imagination and attempts to re-shape the future for the next generations," he said.
He underlined the changes introduced to the education system in the UAE, saying major changes must always be coupled with an educational system that is capable of meeting the required elements to move forward with the development process.
"One problem with the systems of assessment that use letters and grades is that they are usually light on description and heavy on comparison. Some outcome cannot be adequately expressed in this way at all," he noted.
Sir Ken Robinson said the revolution that he is advocating is based on different principles from those of the standards movement.
"It is based on a belief in the value of the individual, the right to self-determination, our potential to evolve and live a fulfilled life, and the importance of civic responsibility and respect for others," he stated.
The lecture was attended by H.H. Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, as well as a number of ministers and senior officials.
