Amman - Iman Abu Kaoud

Princess Basma bint Talal (C) spoke at the women in media conference in Jordan A conference for women who work in the media began in Jordan on Thursday to discuss the effects of the region’s recent political developments on the industry. Held in the city of Petra, the three-day event explored the developments of the Arab media during the democratic change and the role of female media workers during the so-called Arab Spring.
The effect of the press on society and economies was also addressed.
The conference was attended by 10 Jordanian women who represented each media channel and 45 women from various Arab countries, Europe and the US.
Princess Basma bint Talal of Jordan praised the convention, asserting the importance of the press in society. She called for the establishment of an entirely democratic media institution, adding that the press should not be used to achieve fame at the expense of objectivity.
Her Royal Highness pointed out that Arab women have not reaped any benefits from the Arab revolutions. She highlighted that they still face serious challenges in the workplace and must work to protect their achievements so far. Princess Basma called on Arab women to not allow any room for deterioration of their social standing – saying that they still had a long way to go.
