Dr Maytha Salem Al Shamsi honoured researchers at university's Dubai campus
Dr Maytha Salem Al Shamsi, UAE Minister of State and President of Zayed University, honoured two Emirati female researchers from the U.A.E. University who won the 'L'Oreal-UNESCO Pan Arab Regional Fellowship Award 2013
' in a ceremony at the university's Dubai campus.
Fatima Al Jasmi, Metabolic Consultant at Tawam Hospital and Assistant Professor at UAE University, was awarded for her metabolic disorder registry which records cases of Emiratis who suffer from this inherited disorder.
Naeema Ebrahim Karam Al Darmaki, Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering at UAE University, was awarded for her research on green solvents used in extracting components from herbs.
The two Emirati researches were among ten outstanding Arab women scientists who were awarded with a L'Oreal-UNESCO Pan Arab Regional Fellowship Award worth 15,000 Euros in recognition of their contributions to the advancement of science, at the Fourth Annual Ceremony of the Fellowship Award, organised under the patronage of Dr. Al Shamsi in Dubai.
In her remarks at the ceremony, Dr. Al Shamsi noted that the award has contributed to efforts to showcase women's excellence in all disciplines of science, in the Arab region and worldwide.
She noted that H.H Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the General Women's Union (GWU), Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, is among the prominent Arab and world women leaders and has played an effective role in advancing the status of Emirati women.
Al Shamsi also commended the top leadership of the U.A.E., President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Supreme Councl Members and Rulers of the Emirates, and His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for sparing no effort to support U.A.E. women and facilitate their success.
The L'Oreal -UNESCO Pan Arab Fellowships 'For Women in Science', is one of the first regional programs launched by L'Or?al Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO in 2009. This program aims at celebrating the phenomenal achievements of the region's women scientists and to empower them to further contribute to the world of science.
Founded on the premise that 'the world needs science and science needs women', the L'Oreal-UNESCO fellowships are the first international awards devoted to women in science. The program empowers Arab women scientists, highlighting their contributions to the world of science and acknowledging their key role in the development of the region. Plus, the substantial financial awards provide practical help for these talented researchers and inspire future young scientists.
