Zaatari Syrian refugee camp in Jordan
More than 700 women were pregnant among nine thousand in Zaatari Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, revealed a study by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Zaatari is a Syrian refugee camp in Mafraq, Jordan with about 35,000 Syrian
refugees.
The statistics were revealed in a press conference by UNFPA where officials sought to raise awareness about child marriage. UNFPA claimed 25 percent of the women in the camp were forced into marriage when they were under aged.
International support reached Zaatari camp, where blankets and tents were delivered to help refugees cope with the winter.
Education is important in the camp where about 2000 Syrian students are supervised by Jordanian teachers.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesman Ali Bebe said: “International organisations will continue to support Jordan and help Syrian refugees.”
“The number of refugees is increasing in Zaatari camp and despite all aids provided; Jordan still is in desperate need for more humanitarian aid to improve the services for Syrian refugees.”
The United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF) commended the medical services provided by the Moroccan medical-surgical field hospital in Zaatari camp.
This came during a ceremony in honour of the Moroccan and French hospitals staff who contributed to the success of the vaccination campaign for Syrian children.
Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organisation representative Ayman Mefleh expressed his gratitude to the medical staff for treating Syrian refugees.
General Coordinator for Syrian refugees' affairs Anmar Al Hamoud said: "the Jordanian government is intending to decrease the capacity of the camp from 113,000 to 80,000 refugees to face winter."
He added that "a new road has been constructed near the camp to deliver supplies, food and medical aids.”
The Jordanian association for human rights demanded to transfer Zaatari camp from Mafraq to another location as soon as possible, stating in their report that “the camp’s current location is not healthy for the refugees, as it located in a dusty area.”
In August, the government moved 3000 Syrian refugees from a camp in Ramtha to the Zaatari camp.
