Sexual harassment in Egypt during Eid Al-Adha
More than 170 suspects have been arrested for sexual harassment in Egypt during Eid Al-Adha. This comes as the National Council for Women launched an emergency hotline in coordination with the police to encourage women to report sexual harassment. Most of the incidents happened in Cairo, Al-Fayoum, Giza and Suez.
Seven women claimed they were raped. Six suspected have been arrested in Cairo and one was caught in Alexandria. They were dealt with in accordance to the law, a source said.
The council urged women to report these incidents without any delays in order to collect fresh evidence.
Head of the council Mervat Tallawy said a campaign was launched during Eid al-Adha titled “Harassing the Harassers.”
Eighty volunteers took part and dressed in uniform as they tried to spray paint in the back of harassers outside crowded areas around Cairo. Eighteen perpetrators were caught from this campaign.
