The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), and the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) on Thursday organised a graduation ceremony for the first cohort of Syrian refugee youth who completed a range of informal technical and vocational training courses in the Youth Training Centre at the Emirati–Jordanian Camp in Jordan.
The training courses are part of specialised programmes run by Unicef and NRC, the Norwegian independent, humanitarian, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, in order to directly engage the youth and their communities to enhance both their skills and personal capacities.
NRC's education programme, funded by Unicef, EU and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, includes several training disciplines such as tailoring, electrical Wiring, IT and business skills, as well as supporting classes in Arabic, mathematics and life skills. Several entrepreneurial skills such as office management and marketing are also taught. The programme also offers classes in sports, arts, handicrafts and gardening, and has a library dedicated to its students.
Emma Bonar, Youth Project Manager at Norwegian Refugee Council, in her remarks at the ceremony, thanked Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) team and the Jordanian officials for their contribution to the success of the training.
Ms. Bonar also praised the Syrian graduates for their smartness and activity, and their parents for supporting them and believing in their potential.
Later, they all toured a produce and handicraft exhibition for works of the Syrian female graduates.
The ceremony was organised in the presence of Deputy Director of the Emirati–Jordanian Camp, Saif Mohammed bin Sulaiman, and Jordanian officials.
On her part, Besan Abdel Qader, Youth and Adolescent Development Officer at UNICEF Jordan, thanked the graduates, teachers, trainers, ERC team and NRC for their role in the successful training of the refugees.
