5 Khalifa University students had opportunity to delve into world of clean energy
Abu Dhabi - Arab Today

Five Khalifa University students recently had the opportunity to delve into the world of clean energy during their internship with British energy company, Amec Foster Wheeler. Hussain Abdullaziz, Hind Alhamiri, Budour Al Yammahi, Alanoud Alabdouli, and Abdelaziz Alzaabi, were all chosen to travel to the UK in order to gain hands-on experience with a wide variety of sustainable energy options that the company is involved in.

The month-long visit gave students the opportunity to be introduced to the operations of the company's training rig facilities and laboratories, the Hunterston power station and visits to the National Nuclear Laboratory's Cumbria labs, the Gen2 training centre, where they viewed a simulator of the Pressurised Water Reactor, the Dalton Nuclear Institute at the University of Manchester and the institute's facility in Cumbria, UK.

They also engaged in interactive seminars and training sessions in reliability engineering, scheduling and design software, project management, commercial awareness and technical sketching, as well as engaging in an engineering practical, where they discussed and derived key Critical Safety Functions and Safety Functional Requirements, before moving on to apply this as part of a case study.

Hussain commented on his experience, saying "I had prior opinions about the nuclear industry. However, upon completing this visit my opinions have changed. I would now consider joining the nuclear industry."

"We are very pleased that our students had the opportunity to travel to the UK to work with Amec Foster Wheeler, and experience the myriad ways they can work in the clean energy sector," said Dr. Tod Laursen, President. "Nuclear energy is at the centre of the UAE's future energy goals, and spurring student interest in working in this sector is vitally important. Khalifa University is dedicated to developing the UAE's nuclear energy leaders and clean energy leaders of tomorrow, and these exciting internships are a part of that journey."
