New York – Arabstoday
The Journal News, the New York newspaper ,which published names and addresses of local residents with pistol permits media has reportedly hired armed security guards to defend its offices after a wave of condemnation. According
to a police report, RCA Investigations “is doing private security on location at the Journal News as a result of the negative response to the article.” Security guards will be armed and will remain on site throughout January 2 at least.
The newspaper published interactive maps with the names and addresses of gun owners in two counties inside New York State, following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut which left 20 children and six staff members dead last month. The attack became the second-deadliest school shooting in United States history after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.
Conservatives and gun rights advocates have called for a nationwide boycott of the Journal News’ advertisers. The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association has claimed the move “has put in harm’s way tens of thousands of lawful license holders.”
Meanwhile the Journal News refuses to back down, as the paper continues to host the controversial map on its website and vows to post another map listing the details of all gun owners in nearby Putnam County.
