Emirates and Etihad flights scheduled to operate from Dubai and Abu Dhabi on September 16 has been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions caused by super typhoon Mangkhut. Flights to Guangzhou, Cebu, and Clark are also expected to suffer delays on September 17 and 18.
According to an official statement on the Emirates Airlines website, the cancellations will affect customers who are booked on the September 16, Dubai - Hong Kong - Dubai and Bangkok - Hong Kong - Bangkok sectors. Passengers will not be accepted on those flights. However, passengers booked on sector Dubai - Bangkok - Dubai are not affected by these cancellations and can proceed with their travel plans.
The statement said, "Customers are advised to check their flight status for the latest updates and to ensure their contact details are correct by visiting 'Manage Your Booking' to receive latest updates."
Passengers booked to travel to/from Cebu/Clark/Hong Kong/ Guangzhou on September 16, 17 and 18 can opt to change their flights up to seven days later than originally booked. "These passengers are requested to contact their travel agent or booking offices to make changes to their bookings," it added.
Emirates has apologised to its passengers in a statement that said, "The situation is being closely monitored. We are sorry for any inconvenience."
Furthermore, Etihad Airways flight EY833, scheduled to operate from Abu Dhabi on September 16, has also been cancelled. Guests booked on these flights are being assisted with their travel arrangements and being rebooked onto the next available flights, an Etihad spokesperson said. More details on Etihad Airways flight cancellations are awaited.
According to a BBC report, authorities in the heavily populated province of Guangdong have issued their highest warning level, a red alert. More than 100 people were injured when the storm touched Hong Kong. Landslide warnings are in place.
