British mum gives birth to biggest baby in Spain
A British woman has given birth to Spain’s biggest baby to be born naturally, in the country.
Maxime Marin, 40, delivered her daughter, Maria Lorenza Marin
, weighing 6.2 kilos (13 pounds) , without the need of an epidural or painkillers. Large babies are delivered via by caesarean section.
Both mum and baby are said to be healthy and in “perfect health”, following the normal birth at the Marina Salud hospital, in the Mediterranean city of Denia, a statement from the hospital said.
Chief gynaecologist at the hospital, Dr Javier Rius, said in his 40 years of practice, he had never seen a newborn infant weigh so much.
Marin said she expected the baby to be “big but not that big.” Baby Maria was born at 41 weeks, and was the heaviest of her siblings, who were born weighing more than 9lb 14oz.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the heaviest baby to be born weighed 23lb 12oz in 1879, in Canada, whose mother Anna Bates developed gigantism, and died 11 hours later.
