Nicole Saba
Cairo – Hazem El Masri
Nicole Saba spoke to Arabstoday about her new lead role in TV drama “Nour & Miriam” and about her refusal to act in “Adam” with Tamer Hosni due to arguments regarding her fees with its production
company. Here’s what more the artist had to tell us:
*Firstly, why did you accept the role in “Nour & Miriam”?
I accepted the role because it represents a sensitive woman who is full of feelings and the storyline is far from stories about the mafia, drugs and such, which I don’t really like when it comes to TV dramas, I think those topics are only suitable for films. And I have always bet that this drama will be a success because you will see a completely different side to me in it as a play a really sweet and caring woman that when you watch her you feel that such a person has been extinct for a very long time now. There’s a lot of drama in the show which is shown through several ‘sad’ scenes.
*What is the drama’s plot?
It is a social drama but a very romantic one at the same time, and I play Miriam who is a children’s heart surgeon who really cares about humanitarian work to the point where she psychologically treats children before she physically does so. But in her personal life, bad luck is always on her side as she marries an opportunist lawyer who deals with compensation cases, and because they disagree they end up getting a divorce; but he tortures her and takes their daughter away from her which puts her in a state of conflict throughout the whole series. During the series she meets different characters, each one with makes a key difference to her life and one of them is her journalist friend who specializes in uncovering cases of corruption and helps Miriam uncover several cases of corruption in some of the hospital under the old regime.
*You play the role of a mother; how were you able to portray that?
The most difficult things in the world are is to play the role of a mother, especially that I am not one in real life. But the interesting thing is that I present the mother role in different stages, as Miriam gets married at the age of 18 after which she gives birth. Her daughter also goes through different stages in the series.
*You play a surgeon in the drama, how were you able to master the skills of a doctor?
To be honest it was very difficult, that’s why the director, Ibrahim El Shawadi hired a real-life heart doctor who accompanied us throughout the whole filming period so that the drama comes out perfect.
You play the lead role in this drama, and at the same time you say that you are unable to compete with other stars who play a lead role in dramas coming out in Ramadan, the same time as your, why is that?
That’s the truth because Hussein Fahmy and Hunaidi are some of the stars who have been on the scene for a very long time and have a huge fan base, so how could I ever compete with tha or even dare to compare myself to them?
*Why didn’t you do TV drama “Adam” with Tamer Hosni?
Because the production company for that drama offered me a certain fee and it was very small in comparison to this one, which I already agreed to do so preferred that to “Adam.”
*Is there a feud between you and Tamer?
Not at all, he’s a very close friend of mine and had nothing to do with me not accepting the offer.
*What was the reason behind your absence from films after your last film “Al Saffah”?
I didn’t find the suitable and good quality film that I wanted to do even though I was offered many films, but I don’t really like traditional ideas so I’m always looking for roles that will attract viewers and where my audience would see a whole different Nicole in.
*You’ve also stopped releasing albums and only release singles now. Why is that?
It’s because I produce the singles myself, and I believe that making one single and a video clip for it is better than a whole album, as any artist in a concert; the audience always remembers one or two songs and not the whole album.
*Does that mean that you’re not interested in signing a contract with a productions company if you were offered to?
If I did get an offer then I will sure take it and all artists do the same, but I can’t release an album for a while now because the market for it is not doing very well.
*There is Lebanese competition in the Ramadan TV drama market as Carole Samaha plays the role of Sabah. Does comparing you two bother you?
It’s an honor to watch Carole on TV as she is a great actress and has acted very well in plays with Mansour Rahbani. She is very bold to play Sabah’s life story, especially that Sabah is still alive, so I wish her all the best because there will be a lot of comparisons between her and the real Sabah.
*Would you ever stop singing for acting?
Never; what I mean is that taking time off to record an album takes a long time and I have acting to focus on and I hope to do well in both.
