Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi
Cairo – Khalid Ali, Taha Hafez
Egyptian actor Adel Imam was delighted to meet president Morsi on Thursday along with many other artists and intellectuals. Imam said the meeting was very "fruitful".
Actor Ezzat Al-Alayli said: “I discovered
that President Morsi is very aware of our society. He listened well to us, took notes, but he didn’t make any promise."
Adel Imam said in an exclusive statement to Arabstoday: “We met a simple and modest person who loves his country, which was obvious in his conversation with us."
Imam added: “We talked about many issues; the most important one being the need to protect the freedom of art and creativity."
Imam said that some female artists were subject to accusations and insults lately by some sheikhs. Morsi said that “this would not happen again in the future.”
Al-Alayli said to Arabstoday: “We demanded Morsi to release the detainees and we spoke about the ‘Brotherisation’ of the country."
Actors Ezzat Al-Alayli, Yahya Al-Fakharani, Mona Zaki and Ahmed Eid said they received an invitation from the Ministry of Culture to attend the meeting.
Al-Seraiti said that they did not address specific tissues to raise with President Mohamed Morsi, but he said they would hold a press conference to discuss the outcome of the meeting.
Al-Alayli also said that the meeting came at the right time because artists in Egypt have been attacked in the last few days.
He added that he "is looking forward to hearing the president’s view on censorship imposed on artists."
Among the meeting guests were actors Adel Imam, Mahmoud Yassin, Ezzat Al-Alyli, Mohamed Sobhi, Madiha Yousri, Ashraf Abdel-Ghafour, Iman El-Bahr Darwish, Sabreen, Suhair El-Bablii, Mohamed Riyadh, Mohamed Monir, Mostafa Shaaban, Fathi Abdel-Wahab, Sherif Monir and Ali Al-Haggar.
