“The Amazing SpiderMan” to release in July
Film adaptations of comic book superhero stories have come and gone over the decades, leaving filmmakers to wonder how to inject originality into a movie without it appearing as a mere remake.
“The Amazing SpiderMan”
is one such example and due for worldwide summer release in July.
Prior to its release, it has already been dubbed a reboot -- along the likes of the latest Batman trilogy by Christopher Nolan -- by many film critics, even though the movie is designated as the fourth installment of the recent series of Spiderman movies which began in 2002.
Director Sam Raimi left the project, with Marc Webb taking over, and taking the superhero back to where the story all began.
Webb, the director of hit indie rom-com “500 Days of Summer”, has tweaked a few elements of the character but kept it around a teen who gains superpowers after being bitten by a spider.
While many fans have already been quick to dismiss the remake in favour of Raimi’s trilogy, others have defended Webb’s directorial chops in mentioning the grounded nature in Webb’s style, as well as the choice of actor to play the role of Peter Parker/Spiderman.
Andrew Garfield, notably known for his role as co-founder of Facebook, Eduardo Saverin in “The Social Network”, has taken up a “less-nerdy” version of the comic book superhero’s human counterpart. A fan of Spidey since childhood, Garfield expressed his enthusiasm in donning the suit to play the role.
In a recent press junket for the movie, Garfield said he pitched the idea of this version of Peter Parker to be a skateboarder, since the actor has enjoyed skateboarding from a young age, but also that it would tie in well with activating Spidey’s superpowers. He also said that he injected wit and humour to lighten up the script, adding that Webb allowed him room to play around with ideas and improvise lines.
It is now up to the fans to judge how amazing Garfield is in “The Amazing Spiderman” when the film is released across the Middle East on July 5. A sequel is in the works, with Sony Pictures Entertainment announcing a mid-2014 release date.
