Adel Imam, a renowned Egyptian actor and comedian thrilled the guests of the 33rd Sharjah International Book Fair with a special appearance in the presence of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
After entering the venue to warm applause and cheers, the Arab icon lauded the efforts of His Highness in taking a special interest in culture and especially theater. He also praised the UAE’s support to the Egypt during the turbulent political situation it recently went through.
“Luckily, we have a great culture that will remain forever,” he said, adding that he is optimistic about what the future holds.
Imam, who is known for dealing with social and political issues through comedy in his films and plays, was asked if he was planning to document the recent events in Egypt through his work. He said that he is definitely planning to do so.
“I plan to deal with these events through comedy. If we look at the images of the revolution of the 25th of January, we will notice that there are many things that can be considered comedic. Through comedy we can document this period of Egyptian history in a way that is close to people’s hearts,” said Imam, adding that the artist is an important element in the cultural system.
Speaking about the future of cinema and theater in Egypt, Imam said: “We haven’t lost our culture. Art is the conscience of the people. A population with no art is a population with no conscience. Egyptian art is great and will always be great.” He added that though the Egyptian art scene went through a difficult phase, just like everything else in Egypt, a comeback is imminent.
When a young girl asked Imam about which situation affected him the most in his life, Imam mentioned the recent political events in Egypt. “I’ve never been so scared about the future of our country.”
Answering a question about whether or not he would consider playing a role in politics, Imam said: “I was, am and always will be an artist. I’m also a family man who loves to spend time with his grandchildren.”
