Gunmen stole $60,000 from the National Bank cash machine
Banks in the vicinity of Ittihadiya Palace have announced that they will remain closed, amid fears of riots in the region.
The cash ATM's were left empty and banks were forced to close early on Thursday morning
after an attempted gun point robbery at a branch of the National Bank of Egypt.
Robbers attacked the bank in Caliph Mamoun Street, after the cash ATM had been filled with money. Official sources said that masked gunmen stole 400,000 Egyptian pounds ($65,000) from the ATM.
The National Bank decided to close three subsidiary branches in the vicinity of the Palace. Branches of Banque Misr and Banque du Caire, which has two branches, were also closed, along with the Commercial International Bank. All these banks are closed for business until further notice.
An investigation into the robbery is underway.
