Algerian presidential adviser Kamel Rezzag Bara
An Algerian presidential adviser has called on the international community to unite efforts in the fight against extremism
.
Kamel Rezzag Bara, who works closely with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, made the comments at the second meeting of the Global Counter-terrorism Forum (GCTF), in Oran, Algeria.
Attending the event were ministers from the 30 GCTF member states, including Egypt, the European Union, Pakistan, Turkey and the US.
Opening the proceedings, Bara said: "We can’t consider the challenge of terrorism in the Sahel region as a national or a local scourge, neither in its motivations nor in its implications." He described terrorism as "a global problem" which requires global joint cooperation.
Canadian Foreign Ministry representative, Sabine Nolke said suicide attacks in Mali earlier this month showed there was a necessity for a joint programme in Sahel countries, including Algeria, Mali, Niger, Sudan and Eritrea.
