Lahore – Arab Today

British Foreign Secretary William Hague Lahore – Arab Today William Hague, British Foreign Secretary announced on Thursday that the British Council Library in Lahore would reopen in 2014. As reported by the Pakistan Daily News, the decision was based on increased demand from the public for access to books and other resources. The new library will be used for public art exhibitions, meetings, lectures and training and include digital material for researchers.
The British Council in Lahore had shut down the library 12 years ago, however it has continued its attempts at improving the level of education in Pakistan. The reopening of the library is the first step in a series of planned expansions of the British Council’s work in Pakistan, including a cultural space in Karachi which will be opened next year.
During a visit to the British Council offices in Lahore, Hague stated “I am pleased to announce that the British Council will reopen its library to the public in 2014. The library will represent the 21st Century, providing access to books, digital resources, online research materials and cultural events.”
