The Palestinian poet and writer Salim Jubran died at the age of 70, Monday morning in Nazareth, Galilee, after celebrated life spent in the realms of culture, literature, and journalism
.
Salem was born on 1941 in Peki'in village (north of Palestine). Before he got his high school degree from Winnie high school in Kafr Yasif, he started publishing his poems in Palestinian newspapers such as: Al-Etthad, Al-Jadid, and Al-Ghad.
He also joined Marxist seminars in Kafr Yasif, before he joined the Communist Party. After graduating from high school, Jubran worked as editor-in-chief in ‘Al-Ghad’ newspaper, in which he wrote about the Palestinian culture from the Ottoman period to the Nakba, and he also wrote about classical Arabic literature.
He worked as editor in chief in ‘Al-Jadid’ newspaper, and then he moved to ‘Al-Etthad’ newspaper in which he worked with the late writer Emil Habibi as deputy editor-in-chief.
In 1993 he left the Communist Party because of some ideological and organizational conflicts, and continued to work as a journalist and cultural lecturer in universities on multiculturalism, issues of Palestinian culture and the Palestinian cause in general.
He published three poetry collections: ‘Kalimat Men el-Qalb’ or ‘Words from the heart’, ‘Refaq el-Sahms’ or ‘Sun’s friends’ and ‘Qasaed Layst Mohadedt el-Iqama’ or ‘Poems, not confined to residency.”
