Egyptian TV announced that Egypt withdrew its ambassador from Tel Aviv, as President Morsi demanded UN representatives for emergency Security Council meeting over the attacks. The United Nations Security Council has called an emergency meeting to discuss escalating tensions between Israel and the Palestinian territory of Gaza. The meeting took place behind closed doors.
Palestine warns UNSC that Israel is mobilizing on the ground as the emergency meeting takes place and that fear and panic engulf Gaza’s population.
The meeting ended without any concrete decision.
Hamas said they will avenge the killing of Ahmed Jabari, operations commander of Hamas' armed wing, by sending suicide bombers in Israel.
About 100 people protested outside Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s apartment in Tel Aviv Wednesday night following the start of the offensive on Gaza.
Hamas announced a state of emergency in Gaza and evacuated all its security buildings, amid Israel’s announced ground invasion on the strip.
Palestinians retaliated with a rocket attacks towards Dimona Wednesday night. However, no injuries or damages were reported from the attack.
The death toll increased to 11 people dead and over 100 wounded since Wednesday.
Israeli military ships are shelling residential areas in Gaza causing several casualties, the extent of which is not yet reported. Ahmed Jabari was killed on Wednesday in an Israeli airstrike targeting a jeep and a civilian car next to the port of Gaza. Medical sources confirmed that nine people have been killed.
Israeli military spokespersons confirmed that Ahmed Jabari was targeted specifically. They said he was one of many targets in Gaza Strip.
Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Warren of the Pentagon said the US is monitoring the developments in Gaza very closely. “We stand by our Israeli partners in their right to defend themselves against terrorism,” he said.
The UK urged for restraint after the death of Jabari was reported and said further violence wont benefit anybody.
"We continue to call on all sides to exercise restraint to prevent a dangerous escalation that would be in no one's interests."
At an EU-Arab League meeting in Cairo on Tuesday, British Foreign Secretary warned the world of the danger in the Middle East’s instability.
Additionally, UN chief called on both sides to stop escalated attacks in the Gaza strip and urged for both Israel and Palestinian Hamas fighters to ensure civilians are unharmed.
“The Secretary-General calls for an immediate stop to tensions,” UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said.
Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas demanded an immediate end to the bloodshed in Gaza.
Abbas warned of the retaliation against Israel’s escalation on the attacks. Abbas is currently in Switzerland holding meetings with officials to urge the UN to recognise Palestine as a state.
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said the missiles attacking Israel are killing civilians. “Armed Palestinian groups are hiding behind their own citizens. We don’t want to target the citizens,” he said.
He said if there is a need, the army is ready for action and “we will continue to do whatever it takes to defend our citizens.”
