Party rebels have blamed el-Baradei for recent poor showings Cairo – Islam Abou Zeid Egypt’s al-Dustour [“The Constitution”] party, headed by Dr Mohamed el-Baradei, is facing a major split due to differences within the party leadership, sources told Arabstoday .
Party sources claimed internal divisions, centred on differences between Director-General Emad Abu Ghazy and Vice President Ahmed el-Broy, have arisen amid concerns of potential alliances with other Egyptian politics blocs such as the Social Democratic Party.
Abu Ghazy told Arabstoday that the rumors are surrounding the party, stressing that they have not joined any coalitions. He added that they have not participated in any meetings. He added that their party has not announced its position from the current coalitions, stressing the need for achieving accordance with the parties that they would join during the coming period.
One member, Dr Ahmed el-Borai, expressed his support for a future coalition with other parties, describing such a union as “the only way to confront the Islamist movement.”
However, a large bloc of al-Dustour members have already submitted their resignations, claiming the party has abandoned its founding principles.
The party’s youth arm has demanded a full-scale restructuring of al-Dustour. Younger members protested el-Baradei’s recent decision to form party committees, stressing they chose personalities with no relation to the party and demanding a new Director-General be selected for the party.
A new internal campaign, called “Leave el-Baradei,” has blamed the party leader for negative performances in recent months. Party dissidents have demanded Dr el-Baradei leave the party immediately.
