Heavy floods in Algeria
Algiers – Sufian Si Youcef

Heavy floods in Algeria Algiers – Sufian Si Youcef Eight people were killed, dozens were wounded and two went missing on Saturday following severe weather conditions in El Bayadh and al-Aghwat in Algeria when heavy rain leaked into 300 houses leaving dozens homeless from their tin houses and huts. The mayor of El Bayadh said that the high rise of water caused the destruction of houses and the collapsing of a bridge in the centre of the city. He added that the damages left 90 families homeless, where they were transferred to other areas and 30 families were given first aid.
In contrast, El Maseeleh province witnessed heavy rain in the past two days which was recorded at 58 millimetres which has not been recorded for years in the province. The heavy rain flooded more than 300 houses in 6 neighbourhoods. The local authorities for the three provinces have set up a task force to deal with the crisis on Sunday, saying that safety measures for such crisis are not up to standards. Neighbourhood citizens called on authorities to speed up the process of securing their cities from floods which has been facing this problem for 5 years now. The weather forecast in Algeria said that later today parts of the country will be affected by strong winds and rain accompanied by lightning and thunder, stating that rain will be recorded at a level of 40 millimetres.
