After creating a culinary storm in the UK, Wrapchic The Indian Burrito Co is now wowing food enthusiasts in the UAE. Located at BurJuman Centre, the eatery, a brainchild of London-based Mahesh Raikar who quit a Fortune 500 firm to start the chain, offers a bold combination of Mexican and Indian cuisines.

I was there recently to check out if the place lives up to its name. Wrapchic is Mumbai slang (rap-chick) for ‘cool’ or ‘sexy’. Wraposa, the Mexican version of the Indian samosa, helped set me off on the unique Indo-Mexican food journey. While the starter had a typical Indian spiced and flavoured potato filling, the covering was as crisp as biscuits. I loved the experiment with the fillings as flavoursome as the best samosas I have ever had.

Moving on to the mains, I ordered a Mexican sandwich, burrito, which was generously filled with chicken tikka mughlai, rice, beans and salad. Served with a dip of tikka sauce, mango chutney and salsa, the wrap was thoroughly enjoyable. If you find the giant burrito unmanageable, go for the ‘bowl’ version.

A trip to any Mexican-influenced restaurant would be incomplete if one didn’t sample the quesadilla. At Wrapchic, the tortilla flour fold was filled with Hyderabadi tenderly spiced minced mutton, flavoured with Madras sauce, and mixed with potato mash and peas.

The wrap was then topped with onions, potatoes and pepper, and sealed with cheese. It was spicy but didn’t affect the over-all flavour of the fillings

The drinks here deserve a special mention. Apart from the regular soft drinks, the place serves a variety of fruity versions of the traditional Indian yogurt drink – lassi. The high in demand flavours are strawberry, mango and coconut – the last my personal favourite.

My meal came to a sweet end with yet another innovative preparation. In short, the dessert had a twist of crisp to it. Two triangle shaped crisply toasted slices of bread were generously brimmed with Nutella. This simple yet exciting dish was clearly the star of the fare.
