Gaza – Mohammed Habib

Almost half a million Palestinians passed through the Rafah Crossing in both directions in 2012, according to Director of Border Crossings in Gaza, Maher Abu Sabha. This figure is the largest reported in years, suggesting a relaxation of border controls at the only crossing-point connecting Gazan Palestinians with the outside world. In a press statement issued on Thursday, Abu Sabha said: “During the past year 210,873 passengers arrived into Gaza, while 209,215 left it.” However thousands of people were still prevented from making the crossing. “26,199 passengers were prevented passing the crossing,” Abu Sabha added. Last year also saw a significant increase in the number of activists coming to Gaza, along with an influx of aid and medical equipment. Abu Sabha hoped to expand on advancements at the crossing in the new year, stressing that Palestinians are ready to work at Rafah around the clock.
