Italian ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Perrone met on Monday with Agilah Saleh, the Libyan head of House of Representatives, in the eastern Libyan city of Tubrug.
Perrone said he discussed with the head of the House of Representatives mechanisms to overcome the current crisis in Libya and means to improve relations between Italy and Libya.
Perrone said that stability and peace in Libya are very important to Italy, adding that this was his first meeting in Tobrug, and he hopes to hold further meetings in the future.
Perrone added that an Italian consulate will be opened in the eastern region of Libya.
The Italian foreign ministry announced earlier in January that the Italian embassy will be reopened in Libya, making it the first western embassy to return to chaotic Libya.
Saleh said the Italian ambassador stressed that "the House of representatives is the legitimate elected authority" of Libya.
Despite signing a UN-sponsored peace deal by Libya's political rivals and appointing a unity government in December 2015, the North African country still suffers political division and unrest.
